Sleek bun1. Section Bangs: Clip your bangs away from the rest of your hair. 2. Gather Hair: Create a high ponytail, ensuring there’s no part, and smooth the hair at the top and bottom. 3. Part Bangs: Once the ponytail is secure, part your bangs in the middle and smooth them back. 4. Add Bangs to Ponytail: Incorporate your bangs into the ponytail using an additional hair tie. 5. Slick Back: Use an oil or leave-in conditioner to smooth everything down, as it works better than hairspray or gel. 6. Create a Bun (Optional): Twist the ponytail into a bun if you prefer that style. 7. Secure with Hairspray: Finish by applying hairspray to tame any flyaways and hold the look in place. 8. In this exclusive interview, we delve into the inspiring journey of a young stylist Rhea who has embraced her passion for beauty and self-expression. With a vibrant personality and a commitment to her craft, she shares her experiences, aspirations, and the lessons she’s learned along the way. Q: You mentioned feeling hesitant about college. Can you tell us more about that experience? A: Definitely! I was really unsure about college because I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I spent most of my summer trying to figure it out, and I ended up signing up for community college just a week before the deadline. I chose business as my major, thinking it would give me some flexibility. However, after one semester—where I hardly attended class and often just sat in the parking lot or played tennis with friends—I realized the business field wasn’t for me. My personality was just too big for that environment. I decided to take the rest of winter break to reflect on my life. I found myself doing my makeup and hair every day, pondering what I could do for the rest of my life. My friends had always told me I’d make a great hairdresser, so I thought, “Why not give it a try?” | What do you love most about working in the beauty industry?A: I truly believe the beauty industry is one of the best fields to be in. It’s a space where no one has to hide their personality; everyone gets to be who they want to be. You’re not tied down to one specific service, which means I can have a variety of clients throughout the day. I was also really attracted to the idea of being able to wear what I want to work. I’m a firm believer in the concept of “look good, feel good.” Being able to wear clothes that make me feel confident adds so much joy to my job. Plus, starting my career at La Vida Salon has made me fall even more in love with the industry because of the amazing team here! What’s your favorite part of working with clients?A: My clients are definitely my favorite aspect of this job. The look on their faces when I turn the chair around is priceless and something that will never lose its value. The relationships I build with them—from the start of the appointment to the finish—are truly special. We share stories, advice, and laughter, all coming together with a shared goal: great hair! |
ARTIST OF THE MONTH
This interview captures the essence of a young stylist’s journey—a testament to creativity, resilience, and the power of following one’s passion in the beauty industry. Her story serves as an inspiration for aspiring beauty professionals everywhere, encouraging them to embrace their unique paths and express their true selves. |
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years, I hope to have a full clientele book and be living with my boyfriend—who I hope will be my husband by then. I’d love to have at least two dogs! I also hope to have traveled more around the world and to still be at La Vida Salon, hopefully with one of my dogs by my side, serving my dream clientele. I want to provide my dad with his own little house and maybe get him a dog as well. Finally, I aspire to have great mental health and the best physical health I’ve ever experienced! Can you tell us about your background and how it has influenced you?Sure! My mother was born and raised in Angeles City, Philippines, and moved to the U.S. shortly after having my sister. My father grew up in Indiana but moved around quite a bit as a kid. Whenever I asked him about his ethnicity, he would humorously say he’s a “mutt,” which means I’m half Filipina and half “mutt.” I’ve always been curious about my heritage, and I hope to do a DNA test one day to learn more about my roots! | You’ve moved around quite a bit. How has that shaped your journey?I was born in Murrieta, California, and lived a good portion of my life in Moreno Valley before moving to Franklin, New Jersey, in fifth grade. My mom worked for a company called Watson, which was closing its facilities in California and offered our family a move. She loved her job, so we took the opportunity. I’ve been in Sussex County since then, but I’m hoping to venture off soon! | What advice would you give to newcomers in the beauty industry? To anyone new in this industry—whether you’re in beauty school, just graduated, or have been out for about two years—my advice is to never give up! Ask questions, know your worth, and if you’re in your assisting days, take every chance to learn from others. Watch how they handle clients and practice on mannequin heads as much as you can; it will help with your timing. The industry can be tough, and some days will be challenging, but if you keep your mind set on your goals and hold your head high, you can get through anything! |
Marisa
Is a dedicated hairstylist with seven years of experience in the hair industry, where her passion shines through in every cut and style. Though traditional schooling never captivated her, she has always harbored a deep interest in hair, skin, and nails. After completing high school, Marisa took a significant step by enrolling at the Artistic Academy of Hair Design. During her studies, she gained invaluable experience working as an assistant in a busy salon, collaborating with various stylists and developing essential skills that she still utilizes today. Just as she was preparing to transition into a stylist role, the COVID-19 pandemic struck. In response, Marisa and her father creatively transformed their garage into “The Ratchet Salon,” where she offered haircuts to anyone in need. This unique setup allowed her to experiment with new techniques discovered on social media, all while learning to adapt in a challenging environment. Fortunately, she hopes that all her clients left with smiles on their faces. |
Mastering the Art of hair and lifestyle
After the pandemic, Marisa moved to a smaller, more intimate salon, where she began to build her clientele. Initially focusing on color, highlighting, and styling, she ultimately decided to specialize in haircutting. Marisa finds joy in how a haircut can transform a person’s face shape and enhance their individual style. Her favorite cuts to create include shags, bobs, and bangs. She embraces challenges, whether it’s addressing a cowlick, fixing uneven layers, or experimenting with fringes. Post-pandemic, she particularly enjoyed restoring those DIY haircuts that many attempted at home, appreciating the trust her clients placed in her to try new things. | Capturing the Essence of my career | In addition to her professional dedication, Marisa values maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Having experienced burnout firsthand, she lives by the motto “work hard, play hard.” She puts in the effort at work but ensures she carves out time for leisure, whether it’s a weekend getaway, attending a concert, or enjoying a night out with friends. Last year, she even formed a band called “GRL BND” with friends, practicing weekly to enjoy some creative fun. Picking up the drums has become a refreshing outlet for her, allowing her to clear her mind and enjoy the thrill of making music. |
To stay at the forefront of her craft, Marisa invests considerable time and energy into attending cutting classes and workshops. She has learned from esteemed places such as Redken’s Cut and Know Why class, Arrojo Academy in New York City, and ongoing training from her scissor company. A key aspect of her profession is the belief that there is no one-size-fits-all approach; every stylist has their unique method, and Marisa is always eager to learn new tricks and techniques. | Marisa firmly believes that looking and feeling one’s best is vital in any industry. She encourages everyone to approach their day with a positive attitude, dress the part, and embody the philosophy that “look good, feel good!” |
The uplifting and enjoyable work environment, along with the trust her clients place in her skills, contributes significantly to her professional journey. In 2024, Marisa took a significant step by beginning to teach the LA VIDA stylists and assistants the techniques and knowledge she has acquired from various classes. As she continues her path toward becoming a haircut specialist, she aims to become more confident in educating fellow stylists on hair cutting techniques and is excited about the potential contributions she can make to the team. |
How to Style Bangs
From Brazil to Beauty Entrepreneur
At the age of 14, I embarked on a monumental journey from Brazil to the United States, a decision that would change my life forever. The catalyst for this transition was my brother's health. Diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at just 13, he needed specialized medical care that was unavailable in Brazil. My mother had already moved to New York City to support his treatment, and when she invited me to join her, I knew I had to take that leap of faith. | “LIFE IS HAPPENING FOR ME NOT TO ME”Leaving behind my friends, family, and the comforts of home was daunting, but it was a necessary step toward a new beginning. I enrolled in Livingston Middle School and eventually graduated from Hanover Park High School. My early years in the U.S. were filled with challenges, but they also ignited my determination to succeed. | Exploring Different Paths After high school, I initially pursued a degree in criminal justice at Morris County College. However, after a year, I realized it wasn’t my passion. I then moved to Vancouver, Canada, to support my husband’s career. At just 21, I found myself married and navigating new responsibilities. Upon returning to the U.S., I attempted to pursue hospitality management, but this path also left me unfulfilled. I realized I wasn’t passionate about traditional college education. After much contemplation, I decided to take a break from school to figure out my true calling. It was during this reflective period that I stumbled upon the idea of attending beauty school one late night while watching Tabatha Take Over on Bravo TV. |
Embracing the Beauty Industry
At 24, I enrolled in beauty school, ready to embrace my newfound passion. By this time, I was already a mother to a two-year-old and needed to balance my studies with family life. I chose part-time schooling to ensure I could spend quality time with my little family. Knowing that I wanted to expand my family, I decided to have another child while still in school. Once I reached 600 hours of training, I began my journey as an assistant in a large salon. It was here that I truly fell in love with the beauty industry. I dedicated long hours to proving myself and understanding the intricacies of becoming a hairstylist. | "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better."Finding My Niche Within a year of assisting, I became a junior stylist focusing on blowouts. However, I yearned for more than just that. I wanted to create makeovers and build genuine connections with clients. I transitioned to a smaller salon in Parsippany, where I could focus on growing my clientele. | While I was happy working on commission, I felt a growing desire to own my business. As suite salons became legal in New Jersey, I took the bold step of opening my own space in Wayne Sola Studios suite one. At the same time I also received amazing news. I was having my third child. After about a year, I expanded to a much bigger location in Denville with a partner. Fortunately this partnership didn’t work out, prompting me to downsize and move back to a suite space in Madison, New Jersey. |
The Birth of La Vida Salon and SpaThis period has truly been pivotal for my growth as a leader and salon owner. I took the time to reflect on my past decisions and focused on cultivating a strong mindset. It was during this transformative phase that I rebranded my business, leading to the birth of La Vida Salon. As I approach two years of operation, I’m genuinely excited about the progress we’ve made and what lies ahead. Since opening La Vida Salon and Spa, I’ve also launched a small boutique space called House of Vida in collaboration with a dear friend and client. This venture has allowed us to create a unique environment that blends beauty and lifestyle, offering our clients an even more personalized experience. In early 2024, I took another step in my journey by starting the Fearless Power Podcast with another close friend. This podcast is dedicated to empowering women and embracing the lessons we encounter in both business and everyday life. Through our discussions, we aim to inspire and uplift listeners, sharing insights and experiences that resonate with our journey as women navigating the complexities of work and home. I’m thrilled about these new initiatives and the opportunity to connect with more people. The future is bright, and I can’t wait to see how we continue to grow and empower others along the way! | In 2022, I began offering educational classes, and I’m currently focused on rebuilding that aspect of my business. Looking forward to 2025, I have big ideas to further innovate and impact the beauty industry. |
A Journey of Growth and LeadershipReflecting on my journey, I see how my life experiences have shaped me into a better leader and mentor. I love my current space and am dedicated to nurturing my team of stylists. As we near our two-year anniversary in July 2025, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. However, I must also take a moment to express my gratitude to those who have supported me along the way. I want to thank everyone who has followed me throughout this journey. Those who have been there, going above and beyond—you know who you are. Your encouragement, belief, and support have played a significant role in my growth and success, and I am truly grateful for each and every one of you. Together, we continue to build something beautiful, and I look forward to what lies ahead! |

ABout me
Hi, I'm AngelinaMy creative journey in the world of beauty kicked off at the age of 16 when I took the leap and enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. That was a turning point for me, as I was suddenly immersed in the vibrant world of fashion and makeup, and my excitement only grew from there. Driven by my passion, I went on to attend the Christine Valmy International School of Esthetics and Cosmetology, which not only deepened my love for skincare but also laid the groundwork for my future in makeup artistry. |
After completing my education, I jumped into the professional makeup scene at MAC Cosmetics. I spent six incredible years there as a manager, pouring my heart into every project. It wasn’t just about honing my makeup skills; it was a time of immense personal growth. Building genuine relationships with clients reshaped my perspective and ignited a deeper passion in me—not just for applying makeup, but for creating unique, inspired looks that truly reflect each individual’s style and personality.

After leaving MAC Cosmetics, I knew I wanted to explore new opportunities that felt more aligned with my passions. That's when I found Lu (literally a day after- divine timing is crazy!), and everything changed. Starting the journey of developing La Vida was incredibly fulfilling. It felt like a fresh chapter where I could pour my creativity and expertise into something meaningful. Being a part of this salon has been such a rewarding experience. The sense of community we have here truly feels like family. Every day, I’m grateful to be surrounded by talented individuals who share the same vision and passion for our craft. The supportive environment has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally, and Im so thankful to be able to call this “work”.

As I wanted to explore my creativity further, I made the decision to venture out on my own as a travel creative and visual artist. This new chapter allowed me to work with a diverse clientele across various locations, capturing beauty in all its forms. Stepping out on my own was intimidating, but I knew that growth was essential. Taking that leap pushed me into a realm of self-discovery and confidence, opening doors to new challenges and opportunities that helped shape the artist I knew I could become. Throughout this journey, I have been fortunate enough to encounter a variety of amazing experiences that have truly shaped my career. I’ve had the opportunity to work on high-profile celebrity music videos, which allowed me to immerse myself in the process of capturing their artistic vision, photoshoots that challenged my skills and pushed me to my creative limits, assisted in editorial projects, had my work featured in Times Square, and have taken part in multiple New York Fashion Weeks, where I was able to witness cutting-ege makeup and collaborate with talented profand essionals in the industry.
Currently, I am working toward a nursing degree with the goal of becoming a cosmetic injector. This path seamlessly combines my love for makeup and artistry with vital medical expertise. Makeup has always served as a creative outlet for me, and I intend to maintain my role as a visual artist, experimenting with various techniques to enhance my skills. My journey showcases my dedication to personal growth and my genuine passion for beauty in all its dimensions.

IntroductioN
Balayage, a word meaning "to sweep" or "to paint" in French, is a hair coloring technique that's been sweeping the fashion world. Loved by celebrities and fashionistas alike, this trend has taken over the beauty industry. But what exactly is Balayage? Let's dive in!
The ProcesS
What is Balayage?
Balayage is a free-hand hair coloring technique that creates a soft and natural gradation of lightness along the hair strands. Unlike traditional foiling or cap highlighting techniques, Balayage offers a more subtle, sun-kissed glow.
How Balayage Differs from Other Techniques
Unlike other hair coloring methods, Balayage focuses on creating a seamless transition. While traditional highlights might leave distinct lines, Balayage creates soft and natural shades, blending the color with your natural hair tone. Think of it like painting a masterpiece on a canvas!
Benefits of Balayage
Balayage is known for its low-maintenance and customizable nature. Do you want a natural look? Or perhaps something more vibrant? The choice is yours! Balayage provides flexibility, longevity, and a personalized touch.
Getting Balayage Done
Finding the Right SaloN
Finding a skilled stylist is crucial for a successful Balayage. Research salons with good reviews, ask friends, or even consult social media. It's your hair, after all; make sure it's in good hands!
How to Prepare for a Balayage Appointment
Before going to the salon, know what you want and communicate it clearly with the stylist. Pictures and examples can be helpful. Also, avoid washing your hair just before the appointment, as natural oils can protect your hair during the coloring process.
The Procedure Explained
1. Consultation
The consultation is the foundation of your Balayage experience. During this phase, you'll sit down with your stylist and discuss your hair goals, preferences, and any concerns you may have. Are you going for a subtle look or something more dramatic? Do you have any pictures or inspirations? The stylist may also assess your hair type, condition, and natural color to determine the best approach. This stage is all about communication, so don't hesitate to speak up!
2. Sectioning and Painting
Once the plan is in place, the stylist will begin the creative process. Your hair will be sectioned into different parts to provide control and precision during the application. Unlike traditional highlights, Balayage is painted freehand onto the surface of the hair. This allows the stylist to choose exactly where to place each highlight, creating a bespoke and natural effect. The strokes usually start softer at the root and become bolder towards the ends. This mimics the natural effect of the sun, giving your hair that beautiful, sun-kissed look.
3. Developing
After the Balayage has been applied, your hair will need time to develop. This means allowing the color to penetrate the hair shaft and achieve the desired lightness. The developing time may vary depending on your hair type, the color chosen, and the desired intensity. During this phase, heat may be applied to speed up the process or achieve a specific result. Patience is key here; the development stage is vital to attaining the beautiful, nuanced color that Balayage is known for.
4. Washing and Toning
Once the color has developed, it's time to wash it out. The stylist will use a color-safe shampoo and conditioner to cleanse your hair without stripping the newly applied color. Toning is often the next step and is used to neutralize any unwanted undertones and enhance the overall appearance of the Balayage. If the color appears too brassy or not as cool-toned as desired, a toner can help fine-tune the shade. This part of the process ensures that the color is not only beautiful but also harmonious with your skin tone and overall appearance.
5. Styling
Finally, your hair will be styled as desired, whether that's a blowout, waves, or straightened look. This is the moment where you see the full effect of the Balayage come to life. The styling emphasizes the natural, cascading effect of the color and gives you a glimpse of how you can style it at home. Don't be surprised if you find yourself smiling at the mirror, admiring a fresh and radiant look that's uniquely yours!
Each of these steps plays a crucial role in the Balayage process, weaving together artistry, chemistry, and personalized care. With skilled hands and a clear vision, Balayage transforms not just your hair, but your entire look, capturing the essence of you in every strand. It's no wonder this technique has captured the hearts of so many!
