In this exclusive interview, we delve into the inspiring journey of a young stylist Rhea who has embraced her passion for beauty and self-expression. With a vibrant personality and a commitment to her craft, she shares her experiences, aspirations, and the lessons she’s learned along the way.

Q: You mentioned feeling hesitant about college. Can you tell us more about that experience?

A: Definitely! I was really unsure about college because I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I spent most of my summer trying to figure it out, and I ended up signing up for community college just a week before the deadline. I chose business as my major, thinking it would give me some flexibility. However, after one semester—where I hardly attended class and often just sat in the parking lot or played tennis with friends—I realized the business field wasn’t for me. My personality was just too big for that environment. I decided to take the rest of winter break to reflect on my life. I found myself doing my makeup and hair every day, pondering what I could do for the rest of my life. My friends had always told me I’d make a great hairdresser, so I thought, “Why not give it a try?”

What do you love most about working in the beauty industry?

A: I truly believe the beauty industry is one of the best fields to be in. It’s a space where no one has to hide their personality; everyone gets to be who they want to be. You’re not tied down to one specific service, which means I can have a variety of clients throughout the day. I was also really attracted to the idea of being able to wear what I want to work. I’m a firm believer in the concept of “look good, feel good.” Being able to wear clothes that make me feel confident adds so much joy to my job. Plus, starting my career at La Vida Salon has made me fall even more in love with the industry because of the amazing team here!

What’s your favorite part of working with clients?

A: My clients are definitely my favorite aspect of this job. The look on their faces when I turn the chair around is priceless and something that will never lose its value. The relationships I build with them—from the start of the appointment to the finish—are truly special. We share stories, advice, and laughter, all coming together with a shared goal: great hair!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years, I hope to have a full clientele book and be living with my boyfriend—who I hope will be my husband by then. I’d love to have at least two dogs! I also hope to have traveled more around the world and to still be at La Vida Salon, hopefully with one of my dogs by my side, serving my dream clientele. I want to provide my dad with his own little house and maybe get him a dog as well. Finally, I aspire to have great mental health and the best physical health I’ve ever experienced!

Can you tell us about your background and how it has influenced you?

Sure! My mother was born and raised in Angeles City, Philippines, and moved to the U.S. shortly after having my sister. My father grew up in Indiana but moved around quite a bit as a kid. Whenever I asked him about his ethnicity, he would humorously say he’s a “mutt,” which means I’m half Filipina and half “mutt.” I’ve always been curious about my heritage, and I hope to do a DNA test one day to learn more about my roots!

You’ve moved around quite a bit. How has that shaped your journey?

I was born in Murrieta, California, and lived a good portion of my life in Moreno Valley before moving to Franklin, New Jersey, in fifth grade. My mom worked for a company called Watson, which was closing its facilities in California and offered our family a move. She loved her job, so we took the opportunity. I’ve been in Sussex County since then, but I’m hoping to venture off soon!

What advice would you give to newcomers in the beauty industry?

To anyone new in this industry—whether you’re in beauty school, just graduated, or have been out for about two years—my advice is to never give up! Ask questions, know your worth, and if you’re in your assisting days, take every chance to learn from others. Watch how they handle clients and practice on mannequin heads as much as you can; it will help with your timing. The industry can be tough, and some days will be challenging, but if you keep your mind set on your goals and hold your head high, you can get through anything!
